Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one of Rockstar Games’ most technically impressive open-world titles, even years after its original release. Yet players on current-generation consoles are still waiting for Rockstar to deliver a native version that takes full advantage of modern hardware.
That wait could potentially be coming to an end.
A long-running rumor claims that RDR 2 Remaster plans exist for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with an upgraded version potentially bringing improved performance and visual enhancements to Rockstar’s acclaimed western. However, there is an important distinction: Rockstar has not officially announced a Red Dead Redemption 2 remaster or current-generation upgrade.
The latest information therefore remains firmly in rumor territory.
The RDR2 Upgrade Rumor Has Been Around for a While
This isn’t a completely new claim that suddenly appeared in 2026.
Insider NateTheHate has previously reported that a current-generation version of Red Dead Redemption 2 exists and has been targeting PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. In February 2026, he reportedly maintained that RDR2 was still expected to arrive sometime during the year, saying he had not received information suggesting the plan had been abandoned.
That gives the rumor more history than a typical social-media speculation post.
However, there is still no public announcement from Rockstar confirming when—or even whether—the project will actually release.
Why Fans Want a Native PS5 Version
The demand is understandable.
Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One. Although the game can be played on modern consoles through backward compatibility, players have never received the kind of dedicated current-generation treatment that GTA 5 eventually received.
On PS5, RDR2 remains restricted by the limitations of its previous-generation version, including a 30 FPS cap. There is currently no official native PS5 release or dedicated 60 FPS patch from Rockstar.
A proper current-gen edition could therefore make a substantial difference without Rockstar having to rebuild the entire game.

That doesn’t prove RDR2 is next.
But it does demonstrate that Rockstar is willing to bring older Red Dead titles to newer hardware rather than leaving the entire franchise locked to its original platforms.
The difference is that RDR2 is dramatically larger and more technically demanding, making a dedicated current-generation version a much bigger undertaking.
GTA 6 Could Be Affecting the Timing
One of the most interesting explanations for the lack of an announcement involves GTA 6.
Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date. Its latest published lineup does not list an RDR2 current-generation version among the officially announced products.
A separate 2026 report citing NateTheHate suggested that Rockstar may have less reason to rush an RDR2 upgrade while GTA 6 remains on schedule.
The logic is fairly straightforward: GTA 6 is already one of the biggest releases in the company’s history, so another major Rockstar release could potentially compete for attention.
That is speculation, rather than an explanation confirmed by Rockstar.
Take-Two’s Pipeline Makes the Rumor Interesting
There is another piece of information worth watching.
Take-Two has said its longer-term pipeline includes existing franchises and a number of remixes, remasters and platform extensions. That does not identify RDR2 specifically, but it shows that updating established games remains part of the company’s broader release strategy.
Meanwhile, Take-Two’s May 2026 investor presentation said the Red Dead series had sold nearly 115 million units, with Red Dead Redemption 2 exceeding 85 million units sold-in worldwide.
That enormous installed audience gives Rockstar a very strong commercial reason to consider a current-gen edition.
What Would a PS5 Upgrade Mean for Red Dead Redemption 2?
For many players, it would simply be the definitive console version.
The original game already features an enormous open world, dynamic weather, detailed wildlife, sophisticated NPC behavior and one of Rockstar’s most ambitious cinematic stories. A current-gen version wouldn’t need to reinvent those foundations.
Instead, Rockstar could concentrate on removing technical restrictions that have remained since 2018.
A stable 60 FPS option alone would likely be enough to make the upgrade highly attractive to existing owners.
The bigger question is whether Rockstar would sell it as a paid remaster, provide an upgrade path for existing owners, or release it as a free technical update.
