The Red Dead Redemption series has already delivered one of gaming’s most memorable stories, but fans are still imagining where Rockstar Games could take the franchise next. One of the most interesting possibilities is a Red Dead Redemption 3 prequel focused on a much younger Dutch Van der Linde.
The idea has gained attention because there is still a significant part of Dutch’s history that players have never experienced directly. However, there is an important distinction between an intriguing fan theory and confirmed information: Rockstar has not announced Red Dead Redemption 3, and there is currently no official confirmation that a Young Dutch story is being developed.
Why Young Dutch Makes Sense for RDR 3
Dutch Van der Linde was already an established outlaw and gang leader when Red Dead Redemption 2 begins in 1899. Players understand his philosophy, his relationship with Hosea Matthews and Arthur Morgan, and the influence he has over his gang.
But there is a much earlier period that remains largely unexplored.
A prequel could potentially show Dutch before the Van der Linde gang became the infamous group seen in RDR2. That could include his early partnership with Hosea, the formation of his philosophy about freedom and society, and the gradual creation of the gang’s unique identity.
Interestingly, fans have previously pointed toward an old photograph showing younger versions of Dutch, Hosea and Arthur as evidence of an unexplored period that could provide material for another game. That image has helped fuel the idea of an even earlier Red Dead prequel.
But that remains fan speculation rather than evidence of active development.
RDR 3 Has Not Been Confirmed
This is where the latest rumor needs to be handled carefully.
There is currently no Rockstar announcement confirming the title, setting, protagonist, cast or release window for Red Dead Redemption 3. There is also no official statement saying that the game will focus on Young Dutch.
That means headlines presenting Young Dutch as the confirmed protagonist are going further than the available evidence.
The possibility of another Red Dead game is much easier to defend. Roger Clark, the actor behind Arthur Morgan, has repeatedly expressed confidence that another Red Dead game will eventually happen. In 2026, he again discussed the franchise and suggested that a future installment could have a different story and new characters.
That is encouraging for fans, but Clark has not claimed that Rockstar is currently making a Young Dutch game.
A Young Dutch Story Could Be Very Different
If Rockstar ever chooses this direction, the biggest advantage would be the opportunity to show Dutch before players know how his story ends.
In RDR2, Dutch begins as a charismatic leader who genuinely appears to believe in freedom. His relationship with Arthur and Hosea also gives the gang a sense of family that slowly becomes increasingly complicated.
A game set decades earlier could therefore tell a very different type of Red Dead story.
Instead of watching the Van der Linde gang collapse, players could experience its creation. Dutch and Hosea could begin as younger outlaws, gradually recruiting people who would eventually become part of the larger gang.
Arthur could potentially appear much younger, but Rockstar would not necessarily need to make him the protagonist.
That would allow the studio to explore Dutch’s character without rewriting the established events of RDR2.
The Blackwater Mystery Could Become Important
One particularly attractive possibility would be building the story toward the Blackwater ferry robbery.
The disastrous robbery is repeatedly referenced throughout RDR2, but players never actually experience the event as a playable sequence.
A hypothetical prequel could spend much of its campaign showing how the gang reached that point before eventually ending close to the robbery.
That structure would create a direct connection to RDR2 while still giving Rockstar plenty of room to introduce new locations, characters and conflicts.
However, there is also a creative risk.
RDR2 itself was already a prequel, so going even further backward could make the franchise increasingly dependent on familiar characters. Some fans would rather see Rockstar create a completely new cast and location instead of continuing the Van der Linde storyline.
What Roger Clark’s Comments Actually Tell Us
Roger Clark’s comments are particularly relevant because they offer an outside perspective from someone who worked directly on RDR2.
He has previously said he is confident another Red Dead game will eventually exist, while also making clear that Arthur Morgan’s personal story has already been completed.
His more recent comments similarly point toward the possibility of a different storyline rather than simply continuing Arthur’s journey.
That actually makes a Young Dutch concept more interesting—not because Clark confirmed it, but because a prequel would fit the broader idea of exploring another period of the Red Dead universe.
What We Know About RDR 3 Right Now
For now, the situation is simple:
- Red Dead Redemption 3 is not officially announced.
- Young Dutch has not been confirmed as the protagonist.
- No release date has been announced.
- No trailer or gameplay footage exists officially.
- Roger Clark believes another Red Dead game will eventually happen.
- A Young Dutch prequel remains a fan-driven possibility.
The concept is certainly believable from a storytelling perspective, but that should not be confused with evidence that Rockstar has selected it.
If Rockstar eventually returns to the Wild West, the studio has several directions available. It could move forward with Jack Marston, go further back with Dutch and Hosea, introduce an entirely new outlaw, or create a completely separate story within the same universe.
For now, Young Dutch in Red Dead Redemption 3 is an exciting possibility—not an official announcement.
