Ghost Rider is suddenly having a major moment again. After years of waiting for Marvel’s Spirit of Vengeance to receive another major solo gaming project, the character is back in the spotlight thanks to Marvel’s expanding multimedia plans.
Marvel Studios has officially announced a new Ghost Rider movie starring Ryan Gosling, while Ghost Rider is also a playable character in MARVEL TōKON: Fighting Souls. Those announcements have naturally led to renewed speculation that Marvel could be preparing something bigger for the character in gaming.
Now, a separate rumor claims that a new Ghost Rider game could be in development.
There is one major problem, however: Marvel has not officially announced such a game.
So while the idea is certainly possible, fans should currently treat the project as a rumor rather than an established upcoming release.
Why Ghost Rider Is Suddenly Getting So Much Attention
The timing of the rumor is particularly interesting.
Marvel Studios revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that it has started work on a new Ghost Rider movie starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy. The movie is currently scheduled for 2028, with Jonathan Tropper writing the screenplay.
That announcement gives Marvel an obvious opportunity to expand the character across other parts of its entertainment business.
Video games could be one of those areas.
Ghost Rider is already being used in MARVEL TōKON: Fighting Souls, where he joins Blade, Loki and Deadpool as part of the Samurai Outriders team. However, that game is a 4v4 fighting title rather than the kind of standalone action game fans have been requesting.
A dedicated Ghost Rider adventure would therefore be a completely different proposition.
Ghost Rider Already Has a Gaming History
This wouldn’t be the character’s first solo video game.
A Ghost Rider action game was released in 2007 alongside the Nicolas Cage movie. The title was developed by Climax Group and published by 2K Games, with players controlling Johnny Blaze both on foot and while riding the Hellcycle. Take-Two’s original announcement described it as a third-person action experience combining hand-to-hand combat with high-speed motorcycle gameplay.
That formula still has enormous potential on modern hardware.
A new Ghost Rider game could take the basic concept and build something far more ambitious around it.
Instead of simply moving between linear combat arenas, a modern title could give players a large supernatural environment to explore, with highways, abandoned towns, occult locations and sections of Hell connected into a larger world.
What Could a New Ghost Rider Game Look Like?
The character is almost perfectly suited to a modern action game.
Ghost Rider’s supernatural abilities could form the foundation of a combat system built around chains, Hellfire and the Penance Stare.
The Hellcycle could also become much more than a vehicle used between missions.
Developers could potentially allow players to freely ride across large areas, perform high-speed pursuits and use the motorcycle during combat encounters.
That combination could give the game an identity separate from other Marvel titles.
It wouldn’t need to copy Marvel’s Spider-Man or Marvel’s Wolverine. Ghost Rider could instead lean much harder into horror, supernatural mythology and brutal action.
And that may actually be the character’s biggest advantage.
MARVEL TōKON Shows That Ghost Rider Can Work in Modern Games
There is already some official evidence that Marvel is willing to give Ghost Rider a meaningful gameplay identity.
In MARVEL TōKON: Fighting Souls, the character uses a Vengeance Gauge inspired by a motorcycle tachometer. His abilities become stronger as the gauge rises, but overheating it leaves Ghost Rider vulnerable.
That is an interesting example of how developers can translate the character’s supernatural personality into an actual gameplay mechanic.
A standalone title could take that philosophy considerably further.
Imagine a third-person action system where Hellfire abilities, chain attacks and the Hellcycle all interact with one another. Add supernatural bosses and a darker world, and Marvel would have a game that feels very different from its other superhero projects.
But Where Is the Actual Evidence?
This is where the rumor needs to be separated from confirmed information.
At the moment, Marvel’s officially announced Ghost Rider project is the 2028 movie, not a new solo game. Marvel’s gaming lineup already includes Ghost Rider in MARVEL TōKON: Fighting Souls, but there has been no official announcement of a standalone Ghost Rider action title.
Even recent coverage of the character’s return to gaming describes the possibility of another Ghost Rider game as something fans would like to see, rather than an announced project.
That means claims about a specific developer, release date, platforms or gameplay should currently be treated carefully.
Could the 2028 Movie Help Make a Game Happen?
Potentially, yes.
Marvel’s new movie provides the character with renewed mainstream visibility, while his appearance in MARVEL TōKON demonstrates that the gaming side of Marvel is already comfortable using him.
However, a movie tie-in game is not guaranteed.
In fact, a completely original Ghost Rider game could make more sense. Developers would have freedom to create their own story rather than rushing a game to coincide with the movie.
If Marvel wants to establish Ghost Rider as one of its major supernatural gaming characters, a standalone third-person action title could be an excellent way to do it.
Ghost Rider Game Rumor: Current Status
For now, here’s what is actually confirmed:
- New Ghost Rider solo game: Unconfirmed
- Ghost Rider in MARVEL TōKON: Confirmed
- New Ghost Rider movie: Confirmed
- Ryan Gosling: Confirmed as the movie’s star
- Movie release: 2028
- Solo game developer: Unknown
- Game release date: Unknown
- Official game trailer: None
So the rumored Ghost Rider Game is certainly an exciting possibility, but it should not yet be presented as a confirmed Marvel project.
With the character returning to the spotlight in both movies and games, however, the timing has never been better for Marvel to give the Spirit of Vengeance another major solo adventure.
And if that eventually happens, fans will probably expect one thing above everything else: a massive Hellcycle and brutal supernatural combat.
