The long-awaited Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has survived another year of uncertainty, with Saber Interactive confirming that the project is still in development.
The remake was originally announced in 2021 and quickly became one of the most anticipated Star Wars games in development. However, the project has gone through major behind-the-scenes changes, including a developer transition from Aspyr to Saber Interactive.
As of September 2026, Saber has still not revealed a new trailer, gameplay footage or confirmed release date. The studio’s latest direct statement is simple: the KOTOR Remake is still in development.
KOTOR Remake Is Still Alive
In March 2026, Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits was asked about the status of the project during an interview with IGN.
His response was brief: the remake is still in development, but he declined to provide additional details.
That means the project has not been officially cancelled, despite years of uncertainty and very limited public information.
For a game that was first announced five years ago, the lack of footage remains notable. The original 2021 announcement showed a cinematic teaser rather than substantial gameplay, and no new official gameplay presentation has followed.
The official StarWars.com page still describes the remake as a new version of the classic RPG coming to PlayStation 5 and PC.
From Aspyr to Saber Interactive
The remake’s development history has been unusually complicated.
Aspyr was originally responsible for the project after it was announced in 2021. In 2022, reports emerged that development had moved away from Aspyr and toward Saber Interactive.
Saber subsequently became the studio publicly associated with the project. The situation became even more complicated when Saber separated from Embracer in 2024, but reporting at the time indicated that the KOTOR remake would remain with Saber.
This history helps explain why the project has remained so quiet.
Rather than receiving regular updates, fans have mostly had to rely on occasional statements from Saber executives confirming that development continues.
What About the 2028 Release Rumor?
There is one potentially significant development from July 2026.
Saber’s chief business officer Steve Allison mentioned the KOTOR remake while discussing the company’s lineup for 2028. He said the lineup included Space Marine, John Wick and “hopefully” the KOTOR remake.
That comment created headlines suggesting that the remake could be targeting 2028.
However, there is an important caveat.
Saber later told PC Gamer that Allison’s message was genuine, but it was not an official statement about the release status or release targets of the games mentioned.
Therefore, 2028 should currently be treated as a possible internal target or expectation, not a confirmed release date.
A Modern Version of a Classic RPG
The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic launched in 2003 and was developed by BioWare.
Set thousands of years before the Skywalker era, the game allowed players to make decisions that affected their character’s path between the Light Side and Dark Side of the Force.
Players could explore multiple planets, recruit companions, use Force abilities and build their own lightsaber. The official Star Wars description still highlights the game’s role-playing systems, customizable party and large-scale galactic adventure.
The remake is expected to modernize that experience for a new generation, although its exact gameplay systems have not been publicly detailed.
PS5 and PC Remake
The original announcement confirmed PlayStation 5 and PC as the platforms for the remake.
However, because the game has undergone significant development changes since that announcement, players should wait for Saber, Lucasfilm Games or the relevant publishing partners to confirm whether the platform plan remains exactly the same at launch.
There has also been no official announcement regarding Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2 versions.
The KOTOR Universe Is Getting New Attention
Interestingly, the KOTOR remake is no longer the only major project connected to this era of Star Wars gaming.
In December 2025, Lucasfilm Games announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new single-player action RPG being developed by Arcanaut Studios and led by original KOTOR director Casey Hudson. Lucasfilm describes it as an all-new story rather than a direct sequel to KOTOR.
That means fans of the original game’s style have another major Star Wars RPG to watch while waiting for the remake.
When Will KOTOR Remake Release?
For now, there is no officially confirmed release date.
The 2028 discussion is interesting, but it should not be presented as a confirmed launch window. Saber itself has only officially confirmed that the project remains in development.
There is also no new official gameplay trailer, detailed combat showcase or full feature breakdown.
The next major milestone will likely be an official re-reveal that finally shows what Saber has been building.
Until then, the most accurate status is simple: Star Wars KOTOR Remake is still in development, but its release date remains unknown.
