More than 17 years after its original release, Dragon Age: Origins could be heading toward an unexpected second life on modern PCs.

A fan-led development project focused on reconstructing the game’s underlying code has reached a major milestone, with the team reporting that approximately 60% of Dragon Age: Origins has now been decompiled. The developers believe they could reach roughly 90% within another year, potentially allowing the project to become publicly available around 2027.

However, this is not an EA or BioWare remaster. The project is an independent technical effort designed to make the classic RPG easier to maintain and improve on modern PC hardware.

A Fan Project Is Bringing Origins Back

The project is being developed by a small group of contributors who have spent around three years working on the game’s decompilation.

According to the team’s latest update, approximately 60% of the game has been decompiled, with around 55% of the reconstructed code linked. The developers are currently keeping the project closed-source while the work continues.

The eventual goal is to reconstruct enough of the game’s code to allow deeper technical modifications than conventional modding would normally permit.

If the project reaches its targeted 90% milestone, the developers have suggested that they could make the work publicly accessible around 2027. That timeline is a development target rather than a confirmed release date.

This Is Not an Official Remaster

One of the biggest points that needs clarification is the word “comeback.”

EA and BioWare have not announced a new commercial version of Dragon Age: Origins for 2027.

The project is instead focused on the PC version’s technical foundation. It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a fan-made modernization project rather than a remake or remaster.

An EA community manager previously stated that nothing had been announced regarding a Dragon Age: Origins remake or remaster and that any official update would be announced through EA’s official channels.

That distinction is especially important because a traditional remaster would normally involve officially rebuilt assets, textures, lighting and other presentation upgrades. The current fan project is approaching the problem from a completely different direction.

Why Dragon Age: Origins Needs Technical Work

The 2009 RPG has developed a reputation for being difficult to run reliably on some modern PC configurations.

The original game was built around BioWare’s older technology, and modern hardware and operating systems can expose problems that were far less noticeable when the game originally launched.

A successful decompilation could give developers much deeper access to the game’s underlying systems.

The project has discussed potential improvements including 64-bit support, engine-level bug fixes and official controller support. The team has also mentioned possible multiplayer or cooperative functionality as something that could potentially become technically achievable, although these should not be treated as guaranteed features.

The Old Engine Is a Major Challenge

The technical difficulties surrounding Dragon Age: Origins are also relevant to why an official modern version has not appeared.

Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah said in July 2026 that a Dragon Age trilogy remaster would be extremely difficult because there is essentially no one remaining at BioWare with the necessary knowledge of the old Aurora/Eclipse technology. He also revealed that a trilogy remaster concept had previously been considered internally.

BioWare co-founder Trent Oster offered a somewhat different perspective, saying that remastering the older games is technically possible, although it would not be a simple project.

That makes the fan decompilation effort particularly interesting. Instead of waiting for an official remake, the community project is attempting to reconstruct enough of the game’s technical foundation to make deeper improvements possible.

What Could Change on PC?

If the project reaches its goals, the impact could extend beyond simply preventing crashes.

The reconstructed code could potentially provide a foundation for:

  • Better compatibility with modern hardware
  • 64-bit support
  • Engine-level bug fixes
  • Improved controller support
  • Expanded modding possibilities
  • Potential networking experiments
  • Possible cooperative features

However, these possibilities depend on the project’s eventual progress. Reaching 60% decompilation does not guarantee that every planned feature will be completed or released.

The team also isn’t creating a new version of the game’s original artistic assets. The objective is primarily to reconstruct the underlying technology.

Why 2027 Matters

The current 2027 timeframe comes from the fan developers’ own progress estimate.

They believe another year could potentially take the project from its current 60% level toward approximately 90% decompilation. If that target is achieved, the reconstructed work could then be released publicly.

But reaching 90% would not necessarily mean an instantly finished, polished modern edition. Testing, compatibility work, documentation and additional development could still be required.

Therefore, 2027 should be treated as a target rather than a guaranteed launch date.

Dragon Age: Origins Still Has a Future

The latest development doesn’t mean BioWare is officially bringing back the original game.

Instead, it represents something different: a community attempting to preserve and modernize one of BioWare’s most technically challenging classic RPGs.

EA’s official Dragon Age page continues to list Dragon Age: Origins alongside the other major games in the franchise, but there is currently no official announcement for a 2027 remake or remaster.

If the fan project successfully reaches its 90% goal and eventually becomes public, Dragon Age: Origins could receive a new technical foundation for modern PC players without requiring EA to produce an official remaster.
