Grand Theft Auto 6 is taking a significant step away from the traditional mission structure of earlier GTA games. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has confirmed that the upcoming game is set over chapters, with those chapters helping the development team determine how Jason and Lucia move through the massive world of Leonida.
That naturally reminds fans of Red Dead Redemption 2, which used chapters to divide Arthur Morgan’s journey into major stages. However, there is an important distinction: Rockstar has confirmed the existence of chapters in GTA 6, but it has not said that the game will reproduce RDR2’s exact chapter structure.
Instead, Nelson’s comments suggest that chapters are being used as a framework for moving the story forward while still allowing players to step away from the main path and explore the open world.
Rockstar Has Confirmed GTA 6 Uses Chapters
The strongest evidence comes directly from Rockstar.
In an August 2026 interview, Rob Nelson explained how the team structures GTA 6’s story. He described major story moments as “tentpole” missions and explained that the game is set over chapters, which help determine how the story moves the protagonists from one part of the game to another.
This is also consistent with Rockstar’s official Ultimate Edition description.
The official GTA 6 Ultimate Edition information says exclusive content is “threaded across all aspects” of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items becoming available behind each chapter. That confirms that the word chapter isn’t simply a fan interpretation—it is part of Rockstar’s own description of GTA 6’s progression.
What Rockstar has not revealed is the total number of chapters, their names or their exact length.
How RDR2 Could Influence GTA 6

The comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2 is understandable.
RDR2 divided Arthur Morgan’s story into distinct chapters, with major changes to the gang’s circumstances, locations and relationships occurring throughout the campaign.
GTA 6 appears to be using the chapter concept for a somewhat different purpose.
Nelson’s explanation suggests that the chapters help Rockstar manage the movement of Jason and Lucia through Leonida. Instead of treating the entire open world as one continuous sequence of missions, major story beats can provide structure while the player is still allowed to move away from those beats.
So the most accurate description is RDR2-like in the broad concept, but not confirmed to be identical in implementation.
More Freedom Between Major Story Beats
This is arguably the most interesting part of Nelson’s explanation.
After Rockstar establishes the major story moments, the developers consider what happens when players decide to ignore those missions and do something else.
Nelson specifically discussed players going “off the rails”, indicating that the chapter structure isn’t intended to turn GTA 6 into a strictly linear experience.
That could allow the game to combine two ideas that traditionally pull in opposite directions:
A structured cinematic campaign
and
a highly flexible open-world sandbox.
Players could therefore have clearly defined stages in Jason and Lucia’s story while still spending substantial time exploring Leonida, taking part in side activities or simply causing chaos away from the main objectives.
Exactly how far that freedom goes remains unknown.
Chapters Don’t Necessarily Mean a Locked Map
One area where fans should be careful is map access.
The existence of chapters does not automatically mean GTA 6 will lock large portions of Leonida until certain story points.
Rockstar has not publicly explained whether particular areas will be unavailable during specific chapters, nor has it confirmed a system comparable to the more restrictive progression gates found in some older Rockstar games.
The chapter structure could simply be a storytelling and development framework.
That interpretation fits Nelson’s comments, because he discussed chapters primarily in terms of moving the story and protagonists through the world, rather than describing them as barriers to exploration.
GTA 6’s Story Is Built Around Jason and Lucia

The chapter structure also makes sense given GTA 6’s central relationship.
Rockstar officially describes Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as the game’s two protagonists. Their criminal partnership forms the core of the story, with the pair becoming increasingly dependent on each other after a robbery goes wrong and they become caught in a larger conspiracy across Leonida.
Rockstar has also said it wants players to develop a stronger emotional connection with Jason and Lucia, drawing on some of the character-focused storytelling that worked in Red Dead Redemption 2.
That doesn’t mean GTA 6 will become another Red Dead Redemption. Instead, Rockstar appears to be taking certain storytelling lessons from its previous games and adapting them to the GTA formula.
Could GTA 6 Have More Freedom Than RDR2?
The possibility comes from the way Rockstar is describing the relationship between story structure and player behavior.
RDR2’s chapters were closely tied to the evolution of Arthur’s story and the Van der Linde gang. GTA 6’s chapters appear to be designed more explicitly around moving Jason and Lucia through a huge modern open world while accounting for player behavior outside missions.
That could potentially produce a campaign where major events happen in a deliberate order, but the journey between those events remains highly flexible.
However, claims about specific systems—such as completely unrestricted chapter transitions, dynamic chapter endings or multiple story routes—should still be treated as speculation until Rockstar provides more information.
GTA 6’s Chapter Count Is Still Unknown
Rockstar has confirmed chapters, but it has not announced how many GTA 6 will contain.
Claims about a specific number of chapters have circulated online, but there is currently no official Rockstar confirmation for a chapter count.
The same applies to chapter names, exact durations and whether GTA 6 will have an epilogue comparable to RDR2.
Until Rockstar publishes those details, those elements should not be presented as confirmed.
What This Means for GTA 6
The confirmed picture is therefore fairly clear.
GTA 6 will use chapters, but Rockstar is not simply saying that it copied Red Dead Redemption 2’s system. Instead, the chapters appear to function as a way to organize Jason and Lucia’s journey through Leonida while giving developers room to account for players who choose to move away from the main storyline.
That combination could make GTA 6’s campaign feel more structured than GTA 5 while preserving the freedom that players expect from a Grand Theft Auto game.
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as GTA 6’s release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Until the full game arrives, however, the exact relationship between chapters, missions, exploration and player choice remains one of the more interesting unanswered questions surrounding GTA 6.
