The Original Assassin’s Creed Remake could reportedly be the next major revival for Ubisoft’s long-running stealth franchise. A recent report claims that Ubisoft is working on a remake of the game that started the Assassin’s Creed series back in 2007.
For now, however, there is an important distinction: Ubisoft has not officially announced this remake. The current information comes from a leak reported by gaming media, so details about the project should be treated as unconfirmed.
Still, the timing makes the rumor particularly interesting.
BACK TO THE HOLY LAND
The original Assassin’s Creed introduced players to Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, an Assassin operating during the Third Crusade in 1191.
Unlike many later entries, the first game focused heavily on Altaïr’s role within the Assassin Brotherhood and his hunt for key targets across cities such as Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus.
The historical setting remains one of the game’s biggest strengths. A modern remake could potentially recreate these locations with far greater environmental detail while keeping the atmosphere that defined the original adventure.
The first game launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2007, meaning its technology and gameplay systems are now almost two decades old.
THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY WOULD BE GAMEPLAY
A remake would give Ubisoft an opportunity to revisit almost every part of the original experience.
The core assassination structure could remain intact, but modern movement, stealth, combat and traversal systems could make Altaïr considerably more fluid.
The original game also relied heavily on repeating investigation activities before players reached their assassination targets. A remake could potentially restructure those missions, add more meaningful side activities and make each target feel like a unique hunt rather than following a similar formula repeatedly.
That would allow Ubisoft to preserve the identity of the 2007 game without simply reproducing its older limitations.
ALTAÏR COULD RETURN TO THE SPOTLIGHT
For longtime fans, the biggest attraction would obviously be Altaïr himself.
Although the character has appeared in other Assassin’s Creed material, his original adventure has never received the kind of full modern remake treatment that other major gaming franchises have received.
A rebuilt version could give Ubisoft the opportunity to expand Altaïr’s character development while keeping the events of his original story recognizable.
It could also potentially provide newer players with an easier way to experience the beginning of the franchise without having to deal with nearly twenty-year-old mechanics.
UBISOFT IS ALREADY EMBRACING REMAKES
The rumor arrives at an interesting point for Assassin’s Creed.
Ubisoft has now released Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a ground-up remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The company describes it as a remake rebuilt using the latest version of the Anvil Engine, with upgraded gameplay, visuals and additional content.
The project has also performed strongly commercially, with Ubisoft announcing more than 3 million copies sold in its first week.
That success could make the idea of revisiting another classic Assassin’s Creed entry even more attractive.
WHY AC1 MAKES SENSE
Among the franchise’s older games, the first Assassin’s Creed arguably has one of the clearest reasons for a remake.
Its story and historical setting remain recognizable, but its gameplay systems are significantly older than those found in later entries. A modern version could retain the original’s darker atmosphere while adding the depth players now expect from a large Assassin’s Creed production.
There is also a practical reason for interest: the original game has become increasingly difficult to access on newer hardware compared with more recent entries.
WHEN COULD IT BE REVEALED?
This remains the biggest unanswered question.
There is currently no confirmed release date, official title, platform list, developer announcement or trailer for an Original Assassin’s Creed Remake.
Ubisoft has also not confirmed that the leaked project exists. So while the report is certainly interesting, fans should avoid treating the remake as an officially announced game.
If the project is real, Ubisoft could eventually reveal it as part of the franchise’s broader push toward new and revived Assassin’s Creed experiences.
For now, Altaïr’s return remains a rumor rather than a confirmed comeback—but after Black Flag Resynced, the idea of rebuilding the 2007 classic no longer feels quite as far-fetched.
