Microsoft may be preparing a major upgrade to its premium Xbox controller lineup. A leaked prototype believed to be the Xbox Elite Series 3 has surfaced online, and its most surprising feature is a small built-in display positioned near the top of the controller.
The alleged prototype has not been officially announced by Microsoft, but multiple reports have covered the leaked hardware and its unusual features. The display appears capable of showing Xbox-related information, while the controller itself includes several other changes compared with the current Elite Series 2.
Xbox Elite Series 3 Could Have a Built-In Screen
The biggest revelation from the latest leak is the built-in screen.
Images of the alleged prototype show a small display positioned below the USB-C port. One reported image shows Xbox Series X and Xbox Cloud Gaming-related symbols, while another reportedly displays a Microsoft URL. This suggests that the screen could be connected to the controller’s different connectivity modes or internal configuration.
However, there is an important distinction between a display and a touchscreen.
The leaked evidence confirms the presence of a small screen in the prototype images, but current reporting does not establish that it is a fully interactive touchscreen. Therefore, the claim that the Elite Series 3 will definitely have a touchscreen should still be treated as speculation.
The screen could instead be designed primarily for displaying status information, connection modes, profiles or other controller-related information.
New Xbox Elite Controller Design
The alleged Elite Series 3 prototype also appears to introduce several hardware changes.
Earlier leaked images showed two additional scroll wheels along the bottom edge of the controller. The prototype also appears to have a redesigned D-pad, four rear paddles and adjustable trigger hardware.
Another reported change is a removable rechargeable battery.
The leaked battery is reportedly smaller than the internal battery used by the Elite Series 2, but making it removable could potentially make replacement easier over the controller’s lifespan. These details remain based on leaked hardware rather than Microsoft’s official specifications.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Could Be a Major Focus
One of the more interesting aspects of the leaked Elite Series 3 is its reported support for a dedicated cloud-gaming connection mode.
Earlier regulatory images reportedly showed a new pairing interface that could allow the controller to switch between Local Mode and Cloud Mode. The idea appears to be that the controller could connect more directly to Xbox Cloud Gaming rather than relying exclusively on the traditional console connection.
If implemented in the final product, this could make the Elite Series 3 more closely connected to Microsoft’s broader cloud-gaming strategy.
That would also fit with Microsoft’s current push to make Xbox gaming available across consoles, PCs, mobile devices and other hardware.
How It Could Improve on Elite Series 2
The current Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 already focuses heavily on customization. Microsoft officially lists adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter hair-trigger locks, interchangeable components, four paddles and custom button mapping through the Xbox Accessories app.
The Elite Series 3 could take that philosophy further by adding a dedicated display and additional controls.
Instead of needing another device to check certain controller settings, a built-in display could potentially provide information directly on the gamepad.
Exactly what Microsoft intends to do with the screen remains unknown.
Repairability Could Also Be Improved
Another interesting detail visible in the leaked prototype is the internal construction.
Reports note that the controller appears to use accessible Torx T6 screws, while its removable battery could make certain repairs or battery replacements easier.
This would represent an interesting change for a premium controller, especially considering the long-term use expected from Microsoft’s Elite lineup.
Still, Microsoft has not confirmed whether this design will actually reach retail.
When Could Xbox Elite Series 3 Be Released?
There is currently no official release date, price or final specification for the Xbox Elite Series 3.
The leaked prototype reportedly carried markings indicating that it was not intended for sale, and the unit shown in the recent leak reportedly could not successfully connect to Xbox or PC. That means it may be an early development or engineering sample rather than final retail hardware.
The Verge’s reporting indicates that Microsoft’s current plans could see the new Elite controller arrive later in 2026, but this remains a reported target rather than an official launch announcement.
Xbox Elite Series 3: What We Know So Far
At this point, the most interesting reported features include:
- Built-in display
- Possible cloud-gaming connection mode
- Two additional scroll wheels
- Removable rechargeable battery
- Redesigned D-pad
- Four rear paddles
- Adjustable trigger controls
- Potentially improved repairability
But these features should not be treated as final specifications until Microsoft officially reveals the controller.
The biggest question is whether the small display will simply show information or become an interactive touchscreen. The current leaked evidence does not answer that definitively.
For now, the Xbox Elite Series 3 remains unannounced, but the prototype leaks suggest Microsoft could be preparing a significant evolution of its premium controller family.
