The Jak and Daxter remake conversation has picked up again, but fans should be careful about what is actually confirmed. Recent reports have resurfaced an old remake/remaster pitch for Naughty Dog’s classic PlayStation franchise, while newer rumors have also reignited speculation about the series returning in some form.
The important distinction is that Sony has not officially announced a new Jak and Daxter remake.
A Jak and Daxter Remaster Was Previously Pitched
In March 2026, footage from an abandoned Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy remaster pitch resurfaced online. Former Sanzaru Games animator Travis Howe revealed that a team had previously assembled a pitch for an updated version of the original game.
The team created a shot-for-shot recreation of an in-game cinematic to demonstrate what a modern version could look like. However, Howe specifically clarified that the project was not commissioned by Sony and that PlayStation had no involvement in the proposal.
The footage nevertheless gave fans an idea of how the classic PS2 platformer could potentially look with modern visuals.
Is the Jak and Daxter Remake Actually in Development?
At this point, there is no official confirmation that a full remake is currently in development.
The resurfaced project should therefore not be presented as proof that Sony or Naughty Dog are actively producing a new remake. Reports from March described the project as a pitch that never became an official game.
That makes the situation considerably different from an officially announced PlayStation project.
Naughty Dog’s current official website lists Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as its next game, rather than announcing a Jak and Daxter remake.
What About a New Jak and Daxter Game?
The franchise remains closely associated with Naughty Dog and PlayStation. The original Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy launched on PlayStation 2 in 2001 before being followed by Jak II, Jak 3 and Jak X: Combat Racing.
The series is still available on modern PlayStation hardware. Sony’s current PlayStation Store listing includes The Precursor Legacy with a PS5 version and enhanced features such as up-rendering, rewind and quick save.
Another Jak and Daxter Project Is Also Being Discussed
There is another interesting development surrounding the franchise. In September 2026, a report claimed that the previously discussed Jak and Daxter movie adaptation may still be in development. However, that information also remains unconfirmed by Sony, with no official details about its cast, studio or release date.
This does not confirm a new game, but it shows that the Jak and Daxter IP continues to generate interest around potential new projects.
Could a Remake Still Happen?
A modern remake would certainly make sense from a fan perspective. The original trilogy has a strong nostalgic following, while modern PlayStation hardware could allow the world, characters and environments to be rebuilt with significantly improved visuals.
A full remake could also introduce modern quality-of-life improvements while preserving the platforming, exploration and Eco-based abilities that made the original games distinctive.
However, until Sony, Naughty Dog or another officially authorized developer announces such a project, claims that Jak and Daxter remake development is underway should be treated as rumor rather than confirmed news.
For now, the most concrete recent development is the resurfaced footage from the previously rejected remaster pitch—not an official announcement of a new remake.
CONCLUSION
The Jak and Daxter remake may be something PlayStation fans continue to hope for, but there is currently no official confirmation that Sony or Naughty Dog are developing one.
The recently resurfaced remaster footage is real and shows what a modernized version could have looked like, but the project was a fan pitch and was never officially commissioned by Sony.
For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement before treating a new Jak and Daxter game as confirmed.
