A future Resident Evil game could potentially take the survival-horror franchise to Japan.
While Capcom has not announced a new Japan-set Resident Evil title, producer Masato Kumazawa recently revealed that the idea has been considered internally. According to his comments, setting a future entry in Japan is something he has personally thought about, while members of the development team may have considered the idea as well.
🇯🇵 Could Resident Evil Finally Go to Japan?
The Resident Evil series has visited numerous locations around the world, but Japan has never served as the main setting for a numbered mainline entry.
That could potentially change in the future.
Kumazawa explained that because the development team is primarily based in Japan, the idea of creating a Resident Evil experience in the country has naturally crossed their minds. He also indicated that a Japanese setting could potentially appear at some point in the future.
However, this does not mean that Capcom is currently developing a game specifically set in Japan.
What Could a Japan-Set Resident Evil Game Look Like?
Japan could give Capcom plenty of opportunities to create a very different type of survival-horror experience.
A game could potentially explore isolated mountain villages, abandoned temples, underground facilities, dense urban environments or remote forests.
Japanese folklore could also provide inspiration for new creatures and horror concepts. Instead of simply returning to familiar zombie outbreaks, Capcom could create enemies and locations designed around the atmosphere and mythology of Japan.
Of course, these are possibilities rather than confirmed features.
Resident Evil Is Still Expanding
Capcom continues to actively develop the franchise. The company officially announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth mainline entry, while also confirming Resident Evil Veronica as a remake scheduled for 2027.
This means the franchise already has multiple projects moving forward, making it important not to confuse confirmed projects with speculation about a future Japan-set installment.
No Japan Game Has Been Confirmed Yet
For now, fans should treat the Japan setting as an interesting possibility rather than an announced project.
The producer’s comments show that the idea has been considered, but there is no confirmed title, release date, developer announcement or official gameplay information for a new Resident Evil game set in Japan.
If Capcom eventually chooses Japan for a future installment, it could give the series an opportunity to combine its traditional survival-horror formula with a completely new cultural and environmental setting.
Would you like to see Capcom make a Resident Evil game set entirely in Japan?
