For more than a decade, Killzone has been one of PlayStation’s most recognizable dormant franchises. Guerrilla Games moved away from its gritty first-person shooter series after Killzone: Shadow Fall, choosing to build the hugely successful Horizon universe instead.

Now, the long-running PlayStation FPS may finally be preparing for a comeback.

A new report claims that Guerrilla Games is working with an external studio on a Killzone remake or remaster, with the project reportedly still in the very early stages of production. The report does not definitively identify which Killzone game is being rebuilt, although the original 2004 title is considered the most logical candidate.

Sony has not officially announced the project, so the information should still be treated as a rumor rather than confirmed PlayStation news.

Killzone Could Finally Be Coming Back

The latest report comes from MP1st, which says sources familiar with the situation indicate that Killzone has returned to Guerrilla’s plans.

According to the report, the project would involve Guerrilla working alongside an external developer rather than having the entire production handled internally. The exact identity of that partner has not been confirmed.

The report also suggests that the project could take several forms.

It could become a straightforward remaster, a more ambitious full remake, or potentially evolve into something closer to a reboot of the franchise.

That uncertainty is important because the project is apparently still early enough that its final direction could change.

Why the Original Killzone Makes the Most Sense

If Sony really wants to reintroduce the franchise, the first Killzone would be an obvious starting point.

Released in 2004 for PlayStation 2, the original introduced players to the conflict between the ISA and the Helghast. It established the universe, visual identity and militaristic tone that would eventually become the foundation for the franchise.

A modern remake could therefore preserve the original’s basic narrative while completely rebuilding its gameplay and technology.

Instead of simply increasing resolution and texture quality, Sony could create a much more substantial experience designed specifically around modern hardware.

That could include redesigned environments, modern enemy AI, improved weapon handling, expanded animations and significantly larger combat encounters.

A Remake Could Give Killzone a Second Chance

The biggest opportunity may be gameplay.

The original Killzone was ambitious for its generation, but modern FPS design has evolved dramatically since 2004.

A remake could introduce much more responsive gunplay while retaining the heavy, militaristic feeling that differentiated Killzone from faster shooters.

The Helghast could also receive significantly more advanced AI.

Imagine enemy squads coordinating flanking attacks, using cover dynamically and reacting to the player’s tactics rather than simply following scripted combat patterns.

That kind of modernization could transform the original campaign without necessarily abandoning its identity.

Guerrilla’s Involvement Is Particularly Important

The reported return becomes more interesting because Guerrilla Games itself is allegedly involved.

The studio created the original Killzone and subsequently developed Killzone 2, Killzone 3 and Killzone: Shadow Fall. PlayStation’s official material confirms Guerrilla as the developer of Shadow Fall, which launched alongside the PS4 era in 2013.

That means an external studio could potentially handle much of the production while Guerrilla provides franchise knowledge and creative oversight.

Such an arrangement would also allow Guerrilla to continue working on its other projects rather than completely abandoning its current development plans.

What About People Can Fly?

This is where the rumor gets particularly interesting.

People Can Fly has been repeatedly mentioned as a possible external partner.

The studio has a long history with shooters, including Bulletstorm and Outriders. It also entered an agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment for a project codenamed Project Delta, described as being based on Sony-owned intellectual property.

Some reports have connected Project Delta with the rumored Killzone project.

But there is an important caveat: Sony and People Can Fly have not publicly identified Project Delta as Killzone.

The connection is therefore an interesting lead, not confirmation.

The Project Could Be More Than a Simple Remaster

The terminology surrounding the rumor is worth watching.

Some reports describe it as a remaster/remake, while others suggest the project could eventually become a broader reboot.

A full remake would give Sony considerably more freedom.

Rather than simply improving textures and frame rates, the studio could rebuild the campaign from the ground up while retaining the original universe.

A reboot would go even further, potentially allowing Sony to rewrite elements of the story and establish a new starting point for the franchise.

For a series that has been dormant for roughly 13 years, either approach could make sense.

What About Killzone 2 and Killzone 3?

This is another question fans are already asking.

If the first game receives a remake, Sony could potentially use it as the foundation for future remakes of Killzone 2 and Killzone 3.

That would create an opportunity for a modern trilogy.

However, there is currently no confirmed plan for a Killzone remake trilogy.

The present rumor concerns a single project, and even that project has not been officially announced.

So expectations should remain realistic.

Why the Timing Could Be Perfect

A Killzone return could fill an interesting gap in Sony’s first-party lineup.

The PlayStation brand has increasingly become associated with cinematic third-person adventures, while dedicated first-person franchises have been less prominent within Sony’s own studios.

A modern Killzone could give PlayStation another major FPS identity.

And the series already has a distinctive visual language.

The Helghast, their red glowing eyes, heavy armor and futuristic military equipment remain immediately recognizable. A modern remake running on current hardware could turn that aesthetic into something genuinely spectacular.

Killzone Remake: A Comeback Worth Watching

The latest report doesn’t guarantee that players will soon be returning to Helghan.

But this rumor is more substantial than a simple fan wish because it comes with a reported development structure, Guerrilla’s alleged involvement and a possible connection to Sony’s existing Project Delta partnership.

Still, the biggest takeaway is that nothing has been officially announced yet.

If Sony eventually confirms the project, a remake of the original Killzone could be a fascinating way to resurrect one of PlayStation’s forgotten FPS franchises.

After years of waiting, the Helghast may finally have another battle ahead.
