Fallout 5 is finally moving forward at Bethesda, but fans still have plenty of questions about what the next mainline Fallout game will actually bring to the wasteland. One of the biggest possibilities being discussed is the introduction of drivable vehicles, something that could fundamentally change how players explore the post-apocalyptic world.
However, there is an important distinction between what is confirmed and what remains speculation.
Fallout 5 Is Officially in Pre-Production
Bethesda Game Studios confirmed in July 2026 that Fallout 5 is currently in pre-production. The studio also revealed that the game is being developed using Creation Engine 3, the same technology platform being used for The Elder Scrolls VI.
Bethesda described Fallout 5 as its long-range destination, while The Elder Scrolls VI remains the studio’s primary development focus.
That means Fallout 5 is still a long way from release, but its pre-production status is an important milestone after years of waiting.
Could Fallout 5 Finally Introduce Drivable Vehicles?
This is where things become interesting.
The Fallout series has traditionally relied heavily on exploration on foot. While vehicles have appeared throughout the franchise’s world, players have generally not been able to freely drive cars across the wasteland in the mainline games.
A vehicle system could dramatically change that formula.
Players could potentially travel between settlements much faster, explore larger areas and discover locations that would otherwise take significant time to reach. A customizable wasteland vehicle could also fit naturally into Fallout’s post-apocalyptic setting.
However, there is currently no official confirmation that Fallout 5 will feature drivable vehicles.
The idea should therefore be treated as a rumor or fan speculation, rather than a confirmed gameplay feature.
A Larger Wasteland Would Make Vehicles More Useful
If Bethesda decides to significantly expand the game’s world, vehicles could become particularly valuable.
A larger map could allow players to travel between different regions, settlements and dangerous locations while managing fuel, repairs and vehicle upgrades.
That could potentially create an entirely new gameplay layer.
For example, players might need to find spare parts, protect their vehicle from enemies or upgrade its armor and engine. Bethesda could even turn the vehicle itself into another customizable piece of equipment.
Of course, none of these mechanics have been confirmed.
Creation Engine 3 Could Open New Possibilities
One of the more concrete pieces of information is Fallout 5’s technology.
Bethesda says Fallout 5 is being developed on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform intended to power the studio’s next generation of RPGs.
That does not automatically mean vehicles are coming.
However, a new technology foundation could give Bethesda more flexibility when designing systems, environments and traversal mechanics compared with previous Fallout games.
Whether Bethesda chooses to use that potential for vehicles remains unknown.
Fallout 5 Has Plenty of Time to Evolve
The biggest reason fans should not expect detailed gameplay information anytime soon is Fallout 5’s development position.
Bethesda has made it clear that The Elder Scrolls VI is currently its primary development focus, with Fallout 5 still in pre-production.
The studio is also working on several other Fallout projects, including a new Fallout project with Obsidian Entertainment and remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
This means Bethesda has considerable time to decide which features ultimately make it into Fallout 5.
Our Take
Drivable vehicles would be one of the most significant gameplay additions Bethesda could make to Fallout 5.
They could make the wasteland feel larger, improve exploration and introduce new mechanics involving fuel, repairs, upgrades and combat. The concept also fits the franchise’s retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic setting extremely well.
But right now, vehicles remain unconfirmed.
The major confirmed news is that Fallout 5 is officially in pre-production and is being developed with Creation Engine 3. Everything beyond that—including drivable vehicles—should be treated as speculation until Bethesda provides more details.
For now, fans will have to wait for Bethesda’s next major Fallout 5 reveal.
