The Prototype 3 discussion has picked up again after years of silence. The franchise has not received a new mainline game since Prototype 2 launched in 2012, but a series of unusual developments has given fans a new reason to wonder whether the franchise could eventually make a comeback.
There is still no official announcement for Prototype 3, so expectations should remain realistic. However, the latest clues surrounding the original development team and the Prototype franchise are considerably more interesting than the usual social-media speculation.
A Mysterious Prototype Update Started the Conversation
One of the biggest pieces of the recent puzzle was an unexpected update to the original Prototype on Steam.
The game had been largely untouched for years, making the update particularly unusual. Reports noted that it introduced changes that appeared to affect the PC version, including new credits and references connected to Ubisoft Connect. The update also caused problems for some existing mods.
By itself, a Steam update does not prove that Prototype 3 is being developed. Older games can receive technical, compatibility or distribution-related changes for completely different reasons.

Radical Entertainment Has Returned in a New Form

New Radical Games emerged as a new studio carrying the name and creative history associated with Radical Entertainment. The original Radical Entertainment was responsible for Prototype, Prototype 2, The Simpsons: Hit & Run and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
The new company is reportedly a combination involving former Radical and Hothead Games personnel, with Radical co-founder Ian Wilkinson returning as CEO.
That does not mean the studio is secretly making Prototype 3. In fact, there is currently no confirmed relationship between New Radical Games and the Prototype IP owner.
But from a fan perspective, the timing is certainly interesting.
Who Owns Prototype Now?
The ownership situation is important when discussing a potential Prototype 3.
The original games were published by Activision, with Radical Entertainment credited as developer. Prototype 2, for example, is still listed on Steam with Radical Entertainment as developer and Activision as publisher.
Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the Activision portfolio became part of Microsoft’s gaming organization. Xbox officially welcomed Activision Blizzard’s teams and franchises into Microsoft Gaming, while later Xbox communications confirmed Activision Blizzard’s integration into the Xbox business
That means a hypothetical new Prototype game would require the appropriate involvement and approval from the current rights holder.
New Radical Games cannot simply announce Prototype 3 independently.
Does This Mean Prototype 3 Is in Development?
No — there is currently no reliable evidence confirming that.
The strongest evidence for a potential revival is circumstantial:
• The original Prototype received an unusual update.
• The original Radical Entertainment name and creative leadership have resurfaced through New Radical Games.
• The Prototype franchise continues to attract interest from players.
• Microsoft now controls the Activision catalog that includes the franchise.
But none of those points confirms that a third game has entered production.
In fact, community discussions in 2026 continue to acknowledge that there has been no confirmed Prototype 3 announcement, with some fans instead expecting a remaster or remake before a completely new sequel.
Could a Prototype Reboot Come Before Prototype 3?
This may actually be the more realistic possibility.
The original Prototype still has a distinctive gameplay formula built around shapeshifting, parkour, open-world exploration and biological abilities. A modern Prototype reboot could preserve those mechanics while rebuilding the visuals, combat systems and open-world technology for current hardware.
A remake could also provide Microsoft with a relatively low-risk way to test whether there is enough demand for the franchise before committing to an expensive new sequel.
This is speculation, not a confirmed plan.
What Could Prototype 3 Look Like?
If Microsoft ever decides to revive the series, modern hardware could dramatically expand the original concept.
A new game could feature a much larger open world, more advanced destruction, improved shapeshifting mechanics, denser crowds and significantly more detailed infected enemies.
The biggest question would be the protagonist.
Prototype 2 moved away from Alex Mercer and placed players in control of James Heller
A third game could continue Heller’s story, introduce another infected character or completely restart the universe.
For now, there is no official information confirming any of these possibilities.
Our Take on the Prototype 3 Rumor
The Prototype 3 comeback rumors are worth watching, but they should not be confused with confirmation.
The return of Radical’s creative identity is certainly an intriguing development, and the earlier Steam activity makes the situation more interesting. However, there is currently no confirmed developer, release window, trailer or production announcement for Prototype 3.
The most realistic conclusion is that Prototype has a genuine opportunity to return, but we don’t yet know whether that return would be a remaster, remake, reboot or Prototype 3.
For fans who have spent years waiting for Alex Mercer’s world to come back, however, the franchise is at least generating more conversation than it has in a long time.
